I have been at this a while and have repeatedly taken this whole assembly apart and put it back together. The quick connect - when connected - wobbles a lot - unlike the other quick connects. Pretty sure it is the quick connect.

I took the guard off the drive line to more arcuately measure the play in the shaft. Instead of " 4" of space for additional compaction" set forth in my initial post above - I have 1 1/2 inches. Does that mean I should cut the shafts?

My brake rod got bent and the disconnected from the brake lever - easy fix. Doesn't sound like your fix is going to be easy.
