Has anyone changed this seal on a L4060? Is this something most people can do or is this something to take to a dealer? Right side if it matters. Tractor has 750 hours and just made last payment in January.

The key question is are your tire filled? If so can you safely handle removal and re-installation?

Yes, tires are filled and I've had one off before. I was concerned about the cab. It looks like i would have to support that rear corner above the axle. Would all the hydraulic fluid have to be drained? It's close to the 800 hour change.

IDK the answer to draining hydraulic fluid, but if it‘s due anyway, why not?

The key questions are:
Do you have the skill to do it?
Do you have the tools and equipment?
Do you have the proper space and floor?
Do you have the time?

If you failed at any point you might be better off to get someone else to do it. ;)

And yes you either drain the fluid or it will be all over the floor!

You will need to remove this case and part to get to the seal.

I would say this job is way beyond the capabilities of "most people".

As automotive repairs go its not complicated but requires heavy lifting, suitable jacks and stands, a well stocked tool cabinet, basic mechanical skills, and is best done inside on a level concrete floor.

If thats not you best to pay a pro - does not need to be a dealer. Its going to be a bit pricey.

Dan

PS> Failure @750 hours strikes me as premature.

I have the tools, proper floor space, and I think i have the skills. I don't know the proper torque for the bolts holding the axle assemble and the nut,#100.
The bearing #90, how far do you seat that against #100? I'm assuming flush against it.I have the time.

I have a 2 post car lift, if the cab might need to be supported while it's not bolted on that side.

Torque values and assembly/dissasembly procedure should be documented in the WSM. Dont leave home without it.

I had a good day. I got my axle seal done today and a 400 hour service done on my tractor. I made a wooden jig to support the weight of the axle housing and it work perfectly. I knew I wasn't going to be able to support the weight and align the case without some help. I used a furniture dolly to roll it into place.
The loaded tires were a workout. I'm going to see how my tractor pulls my 11' finishing mower without being loaded this summer. I'm always put something on the three point hitch when I'm using the front end loader.
I wanted to say a special thanks to North Idaho Wolfman for all his help on the axle seal repair. It was much appreciated!
Here's a photo of the jig I made. IMG_6246.jpeg
